Highlights of The African Storybook Project

Dr. Bonny Norton of LLED, has been appointed the Research Advisor of the groundbreaking African Storybook Project, an initiative of the South African Institute for Distance Education (Saide). Funded by Comic Relief, UK, the project makes innovative use of the web to promote the multilingual literacy of children across sub-Saharan Africa. As Chair of the Research Advisory Committee, Dr. Norton is coordinating an expanding research network of scholars in Africa and the international community, in collaboration with the University of Cape Town, Makerere University, and Oxford University. Former LLED graduate students are providing outstanding leadership in the project. Other Canadian partners include Aboriginal language educators in the NWT, and the long-established literacy development agency, CODE. The African Storybook Research Network was launched at the Peter Wall Colloquium Abroad held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in October, 2013.
