Instructor I in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) – Tenure-track

The Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track Instructor I position in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). The appointment is expected to commence July 1, 2014.

It is anticipated that shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in March/April, 2014. While applications will be received until the position is filled, interested parties are encouraged to submit by March 7, 2014, to ensure optimal consideration.

Dr. Mary Bryson featured speaker at National LGBT Cancer Summit

Dr. Mary Bryson will be a featured speaker this Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Centre in New York, giving a talk titled “The experience of cancer for LGBT patients: From medical decision making through survivorship” based on the ongoing Cancer’s Margins project  research. This project brings together co-investigators and collaborators from across the country in public health and cancer research. The CIHR funded project seeks to understand how the LGBQT community in Canada experience breast and gynecological cancers from diagnosis through treatment and onwards, and hopes to improve the ways in which previously overlooked sexual and/or gender minority groups access cancer knowledge, support networks and care.

Dr. Jan Hare appointed PI on MOOC

Dr. Jan Hare has been appointed the Principal Investigator of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) titled “Reconciliation through Indigenous Education”. It is one of three courses approved and supported by the UBC Vice Provost’s Office and Flexible Learning. This course will engage educators in opportunities that explore how their teaching practices and school programs may be modified in order to integrate respectfully and meaningfully Indigenous knowledges and pedagogies into the curriculum with the goal of improving educational outcomes for Indigenous/Aboriginal learners and enhancing the learning experiences for all students. Nest Wednesday, we will be celebrating the graduating students of LLED! The graduation ceremony will be in the Chan Centre at 12:30pm, and LLED will be hosting our own department celebration afterwards.

Klara Abdi Ph.D. proposal presentation

Klara Abdi (TESL) will present her Ph.D. proposal, titled: Bilingual Language Socialization across Transnational Social Fields: An Ethnographic Multiple Case Study of Chinese-Canadian Returnee Families. (Abstract available here.)

Highlights of The African Storybook Project

Dr. Bonny Norton of LLED, has been appointed the Research Advisor of the groundbreaking African Storybook Project, an initiative of the South African Institute for Distance Education (Saide). Funded by Comic Relief, UK, the project makes innovative use of the web to promote the multilingual literacy of children across sub-Saharan Africa. As Chair of the Research Advisory Committee, Dr. Norton is coordinating an expanding research network of scholars in Africa and the international community, in collaboration with the University of Cape Town, Makerere University, and Oxford University. Former LLED graduate students are providing outstanding leadership in the project. Other Canadian partners include Aboriginal language educators in the NWT, and the long-established literacy development agency, CODE. The African Storybook Research Network was launched at the Peter Wall Colloquium Abroad held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in October, 2013.
